The History of the Earth: Rocks and Minerals

Quarter One

By the end of this unit students should be able to...

  • Understand the use of fossils and changes in the surface of the earth as evidence of the history of Earth and its changing life forms.

  • Understand the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change or interaction.

  • Volcano

  • Surface

  • Mold

  • Cast

  • Preserved

Systems: Energy, Earth and the Moon

Quarter Two

By the end of this unit students should be able to...

  • Understand that patterns of the movement in the Earth, Sun, and Moon System occur because of gravity and energy from the sun.

  • Understand that day and night is related to the rotation of the Earth.

  • Understand that moon phases are related to the moon’s orbit around the Earth.

  • Understand that energy can be transferred from one form to another.

  • Understand that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.

Energy: Electricity and Magnetism

Quarter Three

Students will understand that…

  • Electricity and magnetism are part of a single force.

  • A closed circuit is a complete loop that allows electricity to flow.  An open circuit does not make a complete loop and electrcity will not flow.

  • Without touching them, a magnet pulls on all things made of iron and either pushes or pulls on other magnets.

  • Energy takes many forms.
